La Rena de Taino
In my “Lonely Boricua Taino” series, I draw upon a deep personal connection to the Taino culture, stemming from my childhood experiences. It all began when, in 5th grade, I found myself compelled to sketch Taino symbols like the Sol and Frog in my history books. This was a response to my teacher’s erroneous claim that the Taino people had gone extinct upon Columbus’s arrival, a statement that perplexed me greatly.
This T-shirt serves as a visual invocation of resistance, identity, and ancestral memory—deeply rooted in Puerto Rican history and spirituality. It features potent symbols: the Puerto Rican Resistance flag and a raised fist marked with a Taíno emblem, uniting collective struggle with personal expression.
The choice of a gray T-shirt is intentional. Gray represents the liminal space Puerto Ricans occupy neither fully a U.S. state nor a sovereign nation. It reflects ambiguity, marginalization, and unresolved status, transforming the entire shirt into a symbol of protest.
